Pigeon Control Methods – Some Basic Information

Pigeon infestation can become a serious problem to contend with. In addition to becoming a pestilence, infestation can become a liability and a health hazard. Pigeon droppings deface the appearance of a building and they also contain harmful fungi and bacteria that are dangerous to human health. Pigeon droppings cause contamination of stored foodstuff in warehouses and pigeons play hosts to lice, ticks and mites. This article aims to detail briefly some basic information on pigeon control methods that are commonly used.

Different Pigeon Control Methods

There are different pigeon control methods that can be used to reduce infestation. However, it is important that one should be aware of bird protection laws in the concerned state before implementing any of these methods.

Set up Barriers

Anti-roosting strips consisting of spikes can be installed on the terrace walls and ledges where the pigeons tend to perch. Spraying sticky chemicals or tying strings across the ledges and walls deter the birds from perching at these spots. Pigeons are averse to spices. Sprinkling pepper or cinnamon where they roost is another method of keeping them away.

Closing Openings/Entry Points

All vents in the attic can be screened to prevent pigeons from coming in. Creating sloping surfaces for all light fixtures/ledges discourages the pigeons from roosting inside, if they manage to get in. In the case of warehouses and larger barns, it is important to seal the space above rafters where pigeons tend to build their nests. Industrial bird netting can be tucked in properly in these spaces to prevent the pigeons from getting into these areas.

Eliminate Pigeon Food Sources

It is important not to feed the pigeons under any circumstances. Also eliminate any bird feeders that may lie in your yard or close to your property. Pigeons have good memories when it comes to food sources and they always tend to come back to the points from where they get food. Do not keep dog or cat food on the outside. Even grass seed attracts pigeons. Berries from specific trees also form pigeon’s food.

Keep Pigeons at Bay

Pigeons can be kept at bay using devices that make specific noises or installing reflective devices like foil balloons and reflective tape. Devices that make noise can also be used to scare away the pigeons. Party snaps placed in the pigeon landing area may help. However these are only short-term deterrents and are effective in small spaces. Concrete statues of bigger birds of prey installed near pigeon landing sites may help. It is also possible that the pigeons will soon get used to these unmoving statues. Ultrasonic devices that emit high-frequency noise which disturbs the pigeons may help. They can be kept in the lofts and ceilings of buildings.

In addition to all of these, other methods of keeping away pigeons include using placing electrical barriers and wind driven devices. Using high quality material and systems give the best outcomes as infestation by pigeons is a perpetual problem.
